Sony Pictures revealed that it will now label its Spider-Man cinematic universe as simply… Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
Each franchise has its own name to differentiate its universe from other companies. Marvel has the Marvel Cinematic Universe. DC has the DC Extended Universe. And just up until recently, Sony had Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters, which is both a mouthful and an idea likely cobbled up by corporate talking heads. Sony probably realized that the name is a pain to say, so they truncated it, revealing at CinemaCon 2021 (via ScreenRant) that their universe will simply be labeled Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Much easier to say!
The new name is easier on the tongue and far more memorable than the previous one. It’s also interesting how Sony is explicitly placing Spider-Man in the title. It’s possible that the entire universe will begin to revolve around the web-slinger. While that may seem obvious, Sony has a number of films in the works that don’t necessarily feature Spidey – at least to our current knowledge, which makes their universe’s title a bit presumptuous. Movies that don’t necessarily include the web-slinger Venom: Let There Be Carnage and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter project. On the other hand, Morbius features Michael Keaton returning as Homecoming‘s Adrian Toomes. Other projects currently in the works include Silk and Madame Web.
With the No Way Home trailer showing the opening of the multiverse, it’s possible that by the end of the film, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe could merge, resulting in one giant cinematic universe.
Here is the synopsis for Spider-Man: Far From Home:
“Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) returns in Spider-Man: Far From Home. Our friendly neighborhood Super Hero decides to join his best friends Ned, MJ, and the rest of the gang on a European vacation. However, Peter’s plan to leave super heroics behind for a few weeks is quickly scrapped when he begrudgingly agrees to help Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) uncover the mystery of several elemental creature attacks. Spider-Man and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) join forces to fight the havoc unleashed across the continent but all is not as it seems.”
