Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson slammed Disney’s demand to move the lawsuit to arbitration.
Recently, amidst the public battle between Scarlett Johansson and Disney over the dual theatrical/at-home release for Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, Disney filed motion to move the lawsuit to closed-door arbitration. Well, it appears that Scarlett Johansson and her legal team have responded to Disney’s motion.
Via Scarlett Johansson’s attorney John Berlinski, the statement criticizing Disney’s motion regarding the Black Widow lawsuit reads as follows:
“After initially responding to this litigation with a misogynistic attack against Scarlett Johansson, Disney is now, predictably, trying to hide its misconduct in a confidential arbitration. Why is Disney so afraid of litigating this case in public? Because it knows that Marvel’s promises to give Black Widow a typical theatrical release ‘like its other films’ had everything to do with guaranteeing that Disney wouldn’t cannibalize box office receipts in order to boost Disney+ subscriptions.
Yet that is exactly what happened – and we look forward to presenting the overwhelming evidence that proves it.”
Scarlett Johansson’s lawsuit went public on July 29, 2021. The Academy Award-nominated actress sued Disney with the claim that the company breached its contract regarding the release of Black Widow, in which an exclusive theatrical run was guaranteed. The actress’ salary was also in part, tied to the film’s box office performance. Disney opted with the dual theatrical/at-home release strategy, making the film available to Disney Plus subscribers through Premier Access at $29.99.
It sounds like the public battle between Scarlett Johansson and Disney will continue, and it appears that the Black Widow star’s legal team isn’t afraid to fire back at the company.
