Netflix has officially debuted the first trailer for their CG animated series He-Man and The Masters of the Universe.
Netflix is doubling down on the He-Man franchise in a big way this year. The streaming service has not one, but two He-Man series that will be running concurrently. The first is Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelations, which is a direct sequel to the animated series from the ’80s. Smith’s series sticks to the classic hand-drawn animation style, while also focusing on a more mature, adult-oriented tone. On the other hand, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a 3D CG-animated series and looks to be perfect for kids.
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a complete reboot of the franchise. Instead of taking place in a classic fantasy world, the new Netflix series is set in an ultra-futuristic landscape, with characters sporting the likes of mechanical armor, explosives. They’re even seen driving space cruisers, a far cry from the horse and carriage routine found in the source material. In fact, the sorcerer Orko is a robot this time around. It’s an interesting fusion between the franchise’s core fantasy look with a more modern sci-fi appeal.
The trailer is filled with light-hearted humor and interesting but loud action sequences, making it a perfect introduction to the He-Man franchise for younger kids. In many ways, it looks as if the series is taking direct inspiration from shows like Power Rangers, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Teen Titans. All in all, the Netflix series seems perfect for kids, though it is hard to deny how much it departs from the source material.
On the planet of Eternia, a young lost prince discovers the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man, Master of the Universe! The classic battle between He-Man and evil Skeletor rages to new heights as both hero and villain forge new and mighty teams. A new generation of heroes fighting for the fate of us all. In the end, who will become MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE?
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe will hit Netflix on September 16th.
