Batman star Michael Keaton admitted he didn’t understand how his return in The Flash would work.
It’s almost impossible to believe but Michael Keaton is suiting up as The Dark Knight again for Andy Muschietti’s The Flash. Inspired by the Flashpoint storyline, The Flash is set to open up the DC Extended Universe’s multiverse by introducing characters like Keaton’s Batman and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl. Ben Affleck is also set to return as his respective Batman, though it’s unclear if he’ll be seen alongside Keaton’s.
While all of this is exciting for us comic book fans, Micheal Keaton was admittedly confused by the entire script – specifically regarding the nature of the multiverse and how his Batman factors into it. In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, the Batman actor revealed he had to go through the script a number of times to understand what was happening. He also had to have the creatives explain what exactly the multiverse was.
“I had to read [the script] more than three times to go, ‘Wait, how does this work?’ They had to explain that to me several times.”
The Flash star then continued by discussing how he was excited to return as Batman because of what the character meant to fans around the world.
“What’s really interesting is how much more I got [Batman] when I went back and did him. I get this on a whole other level now. I totally respect it. I respect what people are trying to make. I never looked at it like, ‘Oh, this is just a silly thing.’ It was not a silly thing when I did Batman. But it has become a giant thing, culturally. It’s iconic. So I have even more respect for it because, what do I know? This is a big deal in the world to people. You’ve got to honor that and be respectful of that. Even I go, ‘Jesus, this is huge.’ “
In a recent interview, Michael Keaton opened up about how it wasn’t weird or jarring to wear the Batman suit again after nearly three decades. Keaton seems extremely comfortable returning to the role after so long, which is exciting considering he’s been sordidly missed by fans all around the world.
Directed by Andy Muschietti from a script written by Birds of Prey scribe Christina Hodson, The Flash stars Ezra Miller, Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, Sasha Calle, Kiersey Clemons, Maribel Verdu, and Ron Livingston. The film will be inspired by the Flashpoint comic storyline, which followed The Flash as he navigated an altered DC Universe. Written by Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kuber, Flashpoint radically altered the status of the DC Comics universe and led to the launch of the New 52 titles. It is currently unknown how much inspiration the upcoming Ezra Miller film will take from the comic.
