Rejected ‘What If…?’ Episode Had The Rocketeer Joining Captain America

A rejected What If…? episode saw Captain America and Peggy Carter fighting alongside the iconic superhero The Rocketeer.

Marvel’s first animated series What If…? hit Disney Plus last week to acclaim from both fans and critics. The first episode proposed a hypothetical scenario in which Peggy Carter becomes the first super-soldier, leading her to take on the role of Captain Carter. The episode was widely praised for its slick reinvention of the Captain America origin story and for giving Peggy the limelight. It turns out, however, that the Captain Carter storyline wasn’t the original plan. In fact, director Bryan Andrews originally environed Captain America and Peggy Carter joining forces with The Rocketeer.

In an interview with Vanity Fear, the What If…? director revealed how he originally wanted to include the WWII superhero The Rocketeer into the mix.

It was also in the vein of doing something vintage and pulpy, because I love that. There were three heroes back-to-back, and they’re fighting, like, all the Nazis. It’s Cap with the super-serum, as we know him, Peggy Carter, just being her normal badass self because she doesn’t need the serum—and the Rocketeer.”

The Rocketeer, a popular character from the heyday of superhero comics, made his live-action debut in the early 90s. The film was produced by Disney and directed by Joe Johnston, who later went on to direct Captain America: The First Avenger for Marvel. While the crossover would have made for a great What If…? episode, Bryan Andrews revealed that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige shot the idea down.

“Kevin was just like, ‘Uh, yeah, no, no, we’re not gonna do that. But I like the drawing!’”

It makes sense why Kevin Feige didn’t let the idea run its course considering The Rocketeer operates within a whole other universe. Regardless, it would have made for a brilliant crossover to see two iconic WWII heroes fight side by side. A potential The Rocketeer episode joins a growing graveyard of abandoned or scrapped What If…? episodes.

Here is the synopsis for What If…?:

“Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.”

What If…? features the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Chadwick Boseman, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The first episode of What If…? is now streaming on Disney Plus, with new episodes being released every Wednesday.
