Marvel Studio President Kevin Feige ambiguously commented on Eternals potentially releasing on Disney Plus.
After Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hits cinemas in early September, the next film in the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Chloe Zhao’s Eternals. Focusing on the immortal alien race of the Eternals, the film will follow the extraterrestrials throughout their time on Earth as they secretly watch and protect us. Filled with an all-star cast and Oscar-winning directors, Eternals is sure to be one of Marvel’s most unique and critically-acclaimed offerings.
With the Delta variant largely mucking up plans for future releases, it’s uncertain from an audience’s perspective if Eternals will actually debut in cinemas. Most recently, Venom: Let There Be Carnage pushed its late-September release to mid-October. At the Shang-Chi premiere last night, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked by Variety if Marvel’s Eternals would be available on Disney Plus, similarly to Black Widow. Not surprisingly, Feige ambiguously answered the question, stating that he would “prefer” for it to be released in cinemas.
“I think a theater would be my preference and [Eternals director] Chloe [Zhao’s] preference. We will see where we go with it.”
“I love the movies. I love going to the movies. I love making movies for people to see in a shared environment in a theater together. To us, that’s what it’s about. The hybrid release can also be good if you want customers to have a choice. In this case, the choice is in theaters for 45 days. Here’s what I know: there’s an opening weekend, and you can go see a movie.”
It has been reported that Kevin Feige was against Marvel Studios’ parent company Disney releasing Black Widow on Disney Plus through its premium Premiere Access model. It appears that Eternals’ release is dependant on Shang-Chi‘s commercial performance, as well as potential lockdowns stateside.
Chloé Zhao is directing Eternals from a script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, and Barry Keoghan as Druig.
Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Eternals, Kevin Feige, and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
