Elizabeth Olsen teased the Scarlet Witch’s character development from WandaVision to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Marvel Studios’ first Disney Plus series WandaVision not only kicked off Phase 4 in the MCU, but also started a new saga for a select group of characters. In particular, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff AKA Scarlet Witch goes on an emotional journey that will continue in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
When it comes to her approach to playing the Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Elizabeth Olsen said that she wanted to make sure it was distinct from her portrayal we saw in her Emmy Award-nominated turn in WandaVision:
“I wrapped WandaVision on a Wednesday and flew to London on a Friday to continue playing this part [in Doctor Strange 2]. I could have used getting out of the mindset, though, because they were totally different utilizations of the character and people would have had more time to understand WandaVision had we not just wrapped. And so there’s just a lot of, ‘We covered this in WandaVision…’ It’s bigger than me, there’s lots of threads that are continuing on after me that I’m not aware of, and so it’s always about, ‘What can I get from this journey with this character that maybe I haven’t tapped into yet with her?’ That’s where I keep approaching things from, so that I feel like I have some sort of strap-hang — that I can know that there’s going to be growth of some kind, even though it all maybe looks the same to other people. There is that conscious decision to learn a new element of this woman, or even of myself as an actor — something that I want to explore that I can bring to it.”
Following her journey in WandaVision, it’s safe to say that the Scarlet Witch we’ll meet in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be someone with quite a lot on her mind. At the very least, we can already bet that Elizabeth Olsen will knock her performance out of the park again.
Details on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to feature horror elements. Furthermore, the Disney Plus miniseries WandaVision also served as the lead-in to the sequel. Scott Derrickson is still attached to the film as an executive producer, with Sam Raimi set to direct from a script written by Michael Waldron. The sequel will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Xochitl Gomez.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on March 25th, 2022. Meanwhile, all episodes of Elizabeth Olsen’s WandaVision are available to stream on Disney Plus.
