Iron Fist stunt coordinator Brett Chan reflected on his experience on the Marvel Netflix series.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off Phase 4 with its first official venture into the television medium this year with WandaVision, followed by The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki and currently, What If…?. Even with the current slate of Marvel shows on Disney Plus, some fans still look back on the few shows that stream exclusively on Netflix, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Defenders and The Punisher.
Some aspects of Marvel’s Netflix shows remain beloved, particularly Daredevil. However, the response to certain aspects of Marvel’s Netflix shows were heavily criticized – particularly Iron Fist, which was often considered to be the weakest link of the Defenders characters. The show was criticized for its writing as well as Finn Jones’ portrayal of Danny Rand AKA Iron Fist, and given the character’s penchant for martial arts, the fight sequences disappointed critics and audiences alike.
Iron Fist stunt coordinator Brett Chan reflected on the Marvel series in an interview with the JoiningAllMovement podcast. Brett Chan found working on Iron Fist to be difficult over numerous factors:
“You know, [we] spent 21-22 hour days trying to make it work and having directors say, ‘Ah, no’ or having Marvel say, ‘Ah, no.’ Everyone is fighting and the actor doesn’t want to train. And it’s like, ‘Guys, throw me a bone. Give me something to work with here.’”
Brett Chan went on to praise Colleen Wing actress Jessica Henwick, citing that her commitment to martial arts training helped make her sequences a highlight:
“That is why some of our best sequences were with Jessica Henwick. Because she trained four hours a day and she has zero martial arts experience. And we had great guys. Teaching aikido judo, and some kinjustsu. And then delivered some kung fu to add in there. It was just…yeah.”
Netflix cancelled Iron Fist after two seasons and subsequently cancelled all the other Marvel series on the service. As of right now, the onscreen future of Iron Fist remains unknown, but martial arts looks to be a prominent part of the MCU’s future with the upcoming release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Iron Fist stars Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, Sacha Dhawan, Tom Pelphrey, Jessica Stroup, Simone Missick and Alice Eve. Here’s the official synopsis:
Iron Fist Season 2 features Danny Rand (Finn Jones) as he fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.
