What If…? almost had episodes focusing on Loki wielding Mjölnir and Steve Rogers becoming Captain HYDRA.
What If…? has arguably one of the most interesting premises to come out of Marvel Studios. Focusing on hypothetical storylines, characters arcs, and events within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the possibilities are practically endless for the animated series. The show debuted on Disney Plus earlier this week, garnering positive reception from both fans and critics. From what we’ve seen, the first season is packed with insane hypothetical scenarios that will make any hardcore MCU head giddy.
Like all creative projects, sacrifices have to be made. In a recent chat with Vanity Fair, writer A.C. Bradley and director Bryan Andrews broke down some of the scrapped storylines for the Marvel show.
One of the more interesting storylines that were scrapped included Loki wielding Mjölnir in the place of Thor. Andrews revealed that the storyline didn’t see the light of day because of the live-action Loki series.
“We had Loki with Thor’s hammer, like Loki was worthy. At first it seems superficial, but how do you get to that point without changing who he is? You’re given a thousand questions to answer. It’s like, Oh, did he stay a Frost Giant? Was Odin not a dick and taught him better? You know what I mean? There are so many aspects of that life you can explore. They didn’t want us to go there because basically they were doing that in the Loki series.”
Another storyline that never got produced imagined Steve Rogers falling off the train instead of Bucky Barnes. Bradley explained that this would have been expanded so Rogers would become Captain HYDRA.
“My idea was, if Steve fell off the train, we would jump forward in time. Steve Rogers is the kind of man that when he believes something is right, he goes to the ends of the Earth to do it. But he actually is not a very good soldier. He doesn’t follow orders. So if he’s brainwashed by Hydra to believe that Hydra is right, he’s going to go full throttle. The fun twist is that it would have been Red Skull, who has now been replaced by Captain HYDRA. They would have had to stop [Rogers] and then make him remember who he really is.”
The Captain HYDRA storyline would have made a fantastic episode but it’s easy to imagine why the What If…? folks didn’t go for it as it was too similar to the Captain Carter storyline, which is expected to continue in the show’s second season.
Here is the synopsis for What If…?:
“Exploring pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and turning them on their head, leading the audience into uncharted territory.”
The upcoming animated series will feature the voices of Josh Brolin, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Paul Rudd, Mark Ruffalo, Chadwick Boseman, Jeffrey Wright, Hayley Atwell, and other major stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What If…? will premiere on Disney Plus on August 11 with new episodes being released weekly. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the new series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
