Loki writer Michael Waldron revealed that he always wanted Kang The Conqueror to be the Marel show’s villain.
The season finale of Loki opened up the most complicated can of worms the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever seen. With the final episode confirming that a variant of Kang The Conqueror was responsible for The TVA, it was revealed that should he die, all his variants would begin to pop up, opening up thousands upon thousands of distinctive timelines. Kang, played by Jonathan Majors, is now poised to return in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and is expected to be Phase 4’s big bad.
Fans and critics absolutely adored Kang’s brief but eclectic appearance in Loki. While it may appear that Kang was just a random villain picked by Marvel to service the multiverse storyline, it turns out that Michael Waldron always wanted Kang in the series.
In a recent chat with CBR.com, Loki showrunner Michael Waldron revealed that his plan was to always have Kang in the series and that he had to “fight” to have the character in the show.
“I was fighting for that from the beginning. That was what I wanted. I think the onus on us was to prove why that made sense. As our story came together, and as we realized this isn’t just a time travel story, this is a multiverse story, and as we really built out what was going to be the mythology of the man behind the curtain, so to speak, it just made sense. Who is more dangerous, who would you want to contain the variants of, more than Kang the Conqueror?”
It’s surprising to hear that how Waldron had to “fight” to have Kang in the show as it almost looks like the entire fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is built around him and the multiverse. The multiverse is expected to be one of the core plot points of Phase 4, with Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness directly tackling the ramifications from Loki.
