Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings will move production from New Zealand to the United Kingdom for its second season.
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings is a show with a lot riding on it. The first season of the show will cost the company over $465M making it the most expensive show ever made. Whether or not this will carry over to the next season remains to be seen but Amazon is already altering the way that they will make it.
Since Peter Jackson first took on The Lord of the Rings property, every live-action installment of the series has been filmed in New Zealand. This included The Hobbit films which were surrounded by a lot of controversies involving the rewriting of certain labor laws in order for the films to be made. But now The Lord of the Rings‘ time in the country is coming to an end.
According to a new report, the production for The Lord of the Rings will be moving from New Zealand to the United Kingdom for its second season. It is mentioned that the decision to move to the United Kingdom was factored by allowing the British cast to remain closer to home while opening up further opportunities to film elsewhere in Europe. It is currently unknown where the studio will film the show’s second season.
The untitled live-action series is being developed by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, who will lead a writer’s room that includes Game of Thrones alum Bryan Cogman. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J. A. Bayona is set to direct multiple episodes of Amazon’s Lord of the Rings series.
Based on previous reports, the upcoming series will take place thousands of years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring during the Second Age of Middle-Earth. Amazon Studios is producing the series in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema. The ensemble for the show consists of Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Budge, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, and Daniel Weyman.
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series will premiere on September 2, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
