Call me a millennial cliche, but I’ve been a Friends fan for just about as long as I can remember. I’ve watched Ross and Rachel break up and make up and break up again, and hummed along to Phoebe’s Smelly Cat more times than anyone should. I don’t consider myself an expert on many things in life, but when it comes to Friends (and of course fashion) I can confidently say, I know my stuff. So you can only imagine the sheer delight I experience when those two subjects collide. And this week has provided a moment of exactly that.
Those who have seen the series umpteen times, like me, will remember “The One Where No One’s Ready.” And those who are fashion inclined will recall in particular the stunning mint green dress Rachel wears in the episode. It is a quintessential example of ’90s minimalism done right, featuring a square neckline, thick shoulder straps and a side split that hits just above the knee.
Each time I watch the episode, I think to myself just how perfect this dress would be for a wedding or more formal occasion, and it seems like someone at the Whistles head office might have been thinking the same thing as the brand has recently launched a bridesmaid dress that is practically an exact replica of the iconic outfit. Whistles’ iteration has the same fit as the dress Jennifer Aniston originally wore in 1996 and also features a cross over detail at the back as well as an on-trend side split. While the label has marketed the maxi as a bridesmaid’s dress, it could definitely be worn for any other formal occasion you have coming up, or of course, as a wedding guest dress. I know where I’ll be getting my next outfit from. Keep scrolling to see the chic Rachel Green-inspired number and then shop more green dresses below.
