Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor has revealed that in his original cut of the film, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki died.
Thor: The Dark World is a film that, alongside Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3 is considered to be one of the weakest installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The behind the scenes drama of the film has been well documented at this point and are generally cited as the reason why the film didn’t entirely work. This included but is not limited to, original director Patty Jenkins leaving the project and Marvel Studios making several changes to the final product after principal photography wrapped.
Details on what the changes were have remained under wraps but director Alan Taylor has revealed a few of them. One of the more notable changes is that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki actually died in Thor: The Dark World. In the film, the character is apparently killed by the Dark Elves before the ending reveals he had faked his death and replaced Odin as the ruler of Asgard. According to Taylor, however, the death of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki in Thor 2 was meant to be permanent:
“The version I had started off with had more childlike wonder; there was this imagery of children, which started the whole thing…There was a slightly more magical quality. There was weird stuff going on back on Earth because of the convergence that allowed for some of these magical realism things. And there were major plot differences that were inverted in the cutting room and with additional photography — people [such as Loki] who had died were not dead, people who had broken up were back together again. I think I would like my version.”
Alan Taylor went on to praise James Gunn and Taika Waititi and thinks that their skills and ability to work with big studios may have turned Thor: The Dark World around:
I really admire the skill set of somebody who can go in with a very personal vision — like [Thor 3 director] Taika Waititi or James Gunn — and manage to combine it with the big corporate demands. I think my skill set may be different.
The next Thor film, Thor: Love and Thunder is being directed by Taika Waititi from a script he co-wrote with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Christian Bale, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, and Jeff Goldblum. Matt Damon, Sam Neill, Luke Hemsworth, Melissa McCarthy, Ben Falcone, and Russell Crowe are also on board.
Full details on the plot for the upcoming film are currently being kept under lock and key. The Marvel Studios film is said to be partly based on Jason Aaron’s Mighty Thor comic book run, with Jane Foster becoming the new Thor.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released on May 6, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Marvel Cinematic Universe and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
