New concept art from The Suicide Squad reveals that Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke was replaced by Idris Elba’s Bloodsport.
After years of waiting, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad finally hit theatres this weekend! The film was praised to high heavens by both fans and critics who adored the standalone sequel’s inventive villain, gory action sequences and hilarious character beats. The film also introduced a slew of new characters to the DC Extended Universe, including Idris Elba’s Bloodsport.
While Bloodsport was for sure one of the film’s many highlights, it turns out that an earlier version of The Suicide Squad may have featured Deathstroke in his place. New behind-the-scenes footage from the film shows early concept art of Deathstroke taking the position of Idris Elba’s Bloodsport.
It’s unclear why James Gunn or DC decided to remove Deathstroke from The Suicide Squad. Gunn has previously mentioned how he enjoys working with characters that haven’t previously been depicted before. Beyond that, Bloodsport’s relationship with his daughter served as a key, emotional component that benefited the film. It’s hard to imagine the ruthless Deathstroke being emotionally manipulated by Amanda Waller.
Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid and Taika Waititi.
The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres and HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Peacemaker series, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
