Ryan Reynolds revealed why audiences shouldn’t expect Deadpool to show up in Free Guy.
Free Guy is one of the few blockbusters coming out of this year that isn’t attached to any IP and Ryan Reynolds would like to keep it that way. While Reynolds may have utilized Deadpool and Korg to promote his upcoming action-comedy, he doesn’t see the need to include the charming but foul-mouthed self-aware anti-hero in his latest film.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Ryan Reynolds opened up about how one of the most exciting parts about working on Free Guy was that it was wholly original and not mired down because of an existing IP. Because of its inherent originality, Reynolds didn’t feel the need to see Deadpool, an extremely popular character, show up.
“For me, the thing that I love most about Free Guy is that we’re doing something that I think is very increasingly rare, and very hard to do in this current marketplace. Which is open a big blockbuster movie that’s based on nothing but an original idea. I mean, it really isn’t an IP, it’s not a sequel, it’s not based on a comic book, it’s not based on anything.”
“It’s based on a concept and an idea that people are familiar with, which is the video game world. I love that we had that opportunity, so no, I never really felt like I needed to put Deadpool in. He wouldn’t really fit in there. We do have some massive surprises in the movie that are courtesy of getting to work at Disney. But yeah no, I never thought of putting Deadpool in there.”
It’s uncertain what those Disney-related surprises are but Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy is only days away from being released, so fans will find out soon enough!

After realizing that he’s a non-playable-character in an open world video game that will soon get shut down, a bank teller played by Ryan Reynolds named Guy tries his best to save himself and the game from being permanently offline.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, Jodie Comer, Utkarsh Ambudkar, and Taika Waititi. Streamers Ninja and Pokimane will have cameo appearances.
Free Guy will hit theatres on August 13, 2021.
