James Gunn Discusses Potential ‘The Suicide Squad’ Vs. ‘Justice League’ Movie

James Gunn says a The Suicide Squad Vs. Justice League movie isn’t “a bad idea”.

One of the most compelling crossover stories that DC Comics has told throughout the years is the heavily underpowered but scrappy The Suicide Squad taking on the Justice League. In fact, Rocksteady, the folks behind the iconic Batman: Arkham video game series, are working on a new game with this exact premise. With The Suicide Squad now out to critical acclaim, fans are wondering what’s next for the team. While a sequel hasn’t been confirmed, fans are hoping to see the team take on the iconic Justice League.

In a recent interview with CNA Lifestyle, director James Gunn was asked if he’d be interested in spearheading a film where The Suicide Squad takes on the Justice League. While he didn’t explicitly say yes, Gunn did mention his interest in the project.

“I’d have to think about that. I haven’t put any thought into a Suicide Squad vs. Justice League movie, but it’s not a bad idea. But I think I gotta figure out who the Justice League is first because I have no clue. I’m here in the middle of DC [and] people are always asking me, ‘Is Henry Cavill still Superman?’ I don’t know who Superman is… who knows!”

The future of the Justice League is uncertain at this current junction. While The Flash, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman are all set to get new solo films, the future isn’t too clear on Henry Cavill’s Superman and Ben Affleck’s Batman. DC Films is actively developing new films based on Superman and Batman, so it’s fair to say that the cinematic Justice League as we know it is a thing of the past. Should a The Suicide Squad vs. Justice League film come up at DC, it would be interesting to give James Gunn full creative control on casting the League.

Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres and HBO Max. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Peacemaker series, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
