James Gunn says he would have been interested in helming a Batman project for DC Films if Matt Reeves wasn’t already working on his film.
James Gunn has always been one of the most transparent directors in the industry, giving fans great insight into how the Hollywood machine churns out hit after hits. Gunn has been extremely vocal about how his time at DC films was positive, and how he was given complete creative reign over The Suicide Squad, which debuted on HBO Max and cinemas last evening. While DC allowed Gunn to work on the standalone sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad, the studio originally envisioned the Guardians of the Galaxy director spearheading a Superman project.
The director ultimately passed on a Superman film but his tune might have changed if he was offered a Batman film. In a recent chat with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Gunn discussed how he would have been interested in taking on The Dark Knight if Matt Reeves wasn’t working on The Batman.
“I’m not saying I’d never be interested in Superman, but if it was Batman, which Matt [Reeves] was already doing, it might’ve felt differently because I understand Batman. I understand Harley Quinn; I don’t understand every character.”
Seeing as the upcoming The Flash solo film has both Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck returning as their respective Batmen, it’s fair to say that DC Films is confident that multiple Batmans can exist on screen. In the end, James Gunn nestled himself into The Suicide Squad’s corner, which is set to make a whopping $70 million this weekend.
Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
