Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum has teased Captain Carter’s return in the second season of What If…?.
Marvel Studios’ first animated series What If…? is set to hit Disney Plus later this month. Set to explore hypothetical scenarios, plotlines, and characters arcs for some of Marvel’s most interesting characters, the series will tell ten stand0alone stories. One of the most promoted hypothetical scenarios sees Peggy Carter getting the super-soldier serum – not Steve Rogers. Instead of living in a world where Captain America exists, the series proposes that the British spy becomes a superhero by the name of Captain Carter.
During a virtual press conference for the series, veteran Marvel executive producer Brad Winderbaum discussed how there are already plans for a second season of What If…?. Winderbaum also revealed how the studio and writer A.C. Bradley have made the decision to revisit Captain Carter’s story in each season of the show. It remains to be seen if other story arcs, such as T’Challa joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, will appear in future seasons.
“We realized, I think, early on in development as we were starting to get AC Bradley’s scripts and starting to look at the arc of the series that there was going to be a character that bubbled up and became more important. Not more important than the rest, but had a strong relationship with The Watcher, who is really our driving force behind the series, and that’s Captain Carter.”
“And we realized as we started developing the second season that Captain Carter was going to be the character who we would revisit in every season and continue that adventure. Obviously, we’re telling a story on a giant multiversal canvas so you never really know who’s going to pop up where and when. It’s very much an anthology, but there’s always opportunity for fun connections to be made”
