Geoff Johns has opened up about how Jay Garrick’s appearance in the second season of Stargirl opens up the series to the Arrowverse.
Stargirl is set to return for its second in less than a month, leaving many fans excited to see the continuing adventures of Courtney Whitmore, a high school student who wields the power of the Cosmic Staff. The series acts in parallel to the Arrowverse, as the characters from the teen series appeared in the Crisis On Infinite Earths specials. While it has been established that Stargirl is connected to the Arrowverse, a monumental crossover of sorts hasn’t happened yet. However, it has been confirmed that The Flash’ Jay Gerrick is set to appear in the second season.
Geoff Johns, the series creator, opened up about what the Jay Garrick appearance means for Stargirl during a press event for the series’ Stargirl’s second season. Johns also broke down how Garrick’s appearance will directly tie the series into the larger happenings of the Arrowverse.
“I grew up watching The Flash TV show, he was my favorite superhero when I was a kid and I was blown away by John Wesley Shipp when he played The Flash and then was lucky enough to work with him on The Flash. And when he started playing Jay Garrick and we introduce our version of the Justice Society and we’re on earth-2 like the comics, we’re on our own Earth separate from the rest of these shows, but to have John play Jay Garrick The Flash in Stargirl, it connects our universe directly with the other shows and also shows that we’re part of a grander universe. And it opens up the door to opportunities for us to eventually interact with those characters. And that was important, just like the comics, and when we do do it, we’ll do it in a hopefully very special Stargirl way.”

Here is the official synopsis for DC’s Stargirl:
‘DC’s Stargirl’ follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (series star Brec Bassinger, “Bella and the Bulldogs,” “School of Rock,” “The Goldbergs”) as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new drama reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series. The series focuses on the character that started creator Geoff Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, lovingly inspired by his late sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash.
Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore, Joel McHale as Starman, Luke Wilson as Pat Dugan, and Meg DeLacy as Cindy Burman. The series also stars Amy Smart, Trae Romano, Cameron Gellman, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson, Jake Austin Walker, Christopher James Baker, and Hunter Sansone. Geoff Johns wrote and executive produced the 13-episode first season, with Sarah Schechter, Arrowverse boss Greg Berlanti serving as executive producers on the series.
Stargirl returns on Tuesday, August 10th on The CW. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the series and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
