Producers John Davis and John Fox have revealed the title and given away some plot details on the Predator franchise’s upcoming 5th installment.
Since the Disney acquisition of Fox, the Mouse House has been busy developing new projects based around the properties they acquired in the buyout. An Alien series is currently in development for FX as is a new Planet of the Apes film. One property that Disney is oddly quiet about, however, is the Predator franchise but it turns out a lot is going on behind the scenes.
Like the Alien franchise, the Predator franchise seemed to run out of gas in the 1980s, with the first film considered a classic and the rest earning a mixed to negative response from fans and critics. For some time now, a new Predator film has been in development with rumors stating that it would be some kind of period piece with a female lead. While reliable details on the film have been next to impossible to come by, producers John Fox and John Davis seemed to have confirmed and at least hinted at the truth behind some of these rumors.
While speaking to Collider the two Predator producers revealed the upcoming film would be called Skull and provided some plot details on the upcoming movie, confirming that the film will have a female lead:
“This is the Predator’s first journey to this planet. The third is our lead-our hero is female which I always think is interesting. I guess I did that with Predator vs Alien. And the fourth thing about it is it goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force.”
Fox would go on to explain that it feels more like the Leonardo Dicaprio film, The Revenant than previous Predator films:
“It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You’ll know what I mean once you see it.”
Davis wouldn’t confirm when the film would take place but did say that it was in an earlier time period:
“You can use your imagination. It is… early.”
