Marvel Made ‘A Lot Of’ Concept Art Of Jake Gyllenhaal As Captain America

The Captain America: The First Avenger writers revealed that Marvel had made “a lot of” concept art of Jake Gyllenhaal as the Star-Spangled hero.

It’s hard to believe it but it has been ten years since Chris Evans’ first stint as Captain America hit theatres. Before Evans was brought on to join the WWII superhero film, dozens of actors were considered for the iconic role.  Some choices included John Krasinski, Wyatt Russell (who would eventually go on to briefly become Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), and Sebastian Stan, who would later end up taking on the role of Steve Rogers’ best friend: Bucky Barnes.

Another name being floated around was Jake Gyllenhaal, one of the more popular talents out of the pool of actors Marvel considered for the role. Unfortunately, Gyllenhaal didn’t land the role but did end up joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Spider-Man: Far From Home as Mysterio. However, Marvel did consider Gyllenhaal as a sort of front runner for the role as the studio had made “a lot of concept art” of him as Captain America. Speaking with Yahoo! Entertainment, The First Avenger writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely discussed the early casting choices Marvel was considering. They also revealed that they saw a lot of concept art of Gyllenhaal in the role.

Markus & McFeely also recalled the early concept art being “a lot of Jake Gyllenhaal-as-Cap pictures.”

They also watched Sebastian Stan audition for Cap: “He carried some of what he carried into Bucky, which then carried into Winter Soldier, which is he has a darkness to him.” pic.twitter.com/eGxi8bIPpK
