Dwayne Johnson will not be returning for the next two chapters of the Fast and Furious saga.
After making his debut in the Fast and Furious film franchise in Justin Lin’s Fast Five in 2011, Dwayne Johnson became an integral member of the franchise with his role as Luke Hobbs. The addition of this character is highly considered to be a major factor in the series’ ascendant popularity in recent years, leading to subsequent appearances in Fast and Furious 6, Furious 7, The Fate of the Furious and the spinoff film, Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw.
Dwayne Johnson was notably absent from the latest entry in the franchise, F9. The actor was involved in a public feud with lead star Vin Diesel during and after production on The Fate of the Furious. Fans held out hope that Dwayne Johnson would return for the final two installments of the Fast and Furious saga, but it looks like that won’t be happening. While promoting his new film Jungle Cruise as part of The Hollywood Reporter’s cover story featuring him and co-star Emily Blunt, Dwayne Johnson addressed recent comments from Diesel regarding their public feud, which Diesel claims was to push the former wrestler to give a stronger performance:
“I laughed and I laughed hard. I think everyone had a laugh at that. And I’ll leave it at that. And that I’ve wished them well. I wish them well on Fast 9. And I wish them the best of luck on Fast 10 and Fast 11 and the rest of the Fast & Furious movies they do that will be without me.”
Are you disappointed to hear that Dwayne Johnson won’t return for the final two entries in the Fast and Furious saga? Sound off in the comments below.
Here is the synopsis for F9:
“Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, this year’s The Suicide Squad).
F9 sees the return of Justin Lin as director, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters of the series when it transformed into a global blockbuster. The action hurtles around the globe—from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tblisi. Along the way, old friends will be resurrected, old foes will return, history will be rewritten, and the true meaning of family will be tested like never before.”
Directed Justin Lin from a script written by Daniel Casey, F9 stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Cardi B and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.
F9 is now playing in theaters. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Dwayne Johnson and the future of the Fast and Furious franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
