The Suicide Squad director James Gunn discloses how he decided which members of Task Force X were going to die.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of watching James Gunn’s newest film The Suicide Squad and later Warner Bros. held a Q&A with the director where he revealed some interesting details on the film. I had a lot of fun with The Suicide Squad, but the most interesting thing about the film was who dies and when. During the Q&A, Gunn revealed his process of choosing who would live and die in Task Force X.
”It’s fun watching people die. Sometimes it was really pretty organic. I mean, I had to choose what characters I was going to use from DC and I had a huge trove of characters to choose from. Some characters, I knew were gonna die from the beginning. And then other characters, I didn’t know for sure that they were gonna die.” said the director. “And so, obviously, I chose some characters that I knew were going to die. And we see that as the movie plays out. And it was just about choosing different characters for different reasons. I wanted it to be a really wide spectrum of types of characters from DC to be able to have somebody who’s cool and sort of, you know, angry, like a dark character, like Bloodsport, but then also somebody who is completely over the top, seemingly goofy but [someone] we give soul to, like Polka-Dot Man. And then somebody who’s incredibly useless like Javelin, who’s going to a machine gun fight with a javelin of all things. And then an alien, Mongal, and having all these these different characters and seeing what happens.”
Gunn went on to discuss some of the deaths that hurt him the most and when you see the film I’m willing to bet those deaths would surprise you. “Some of the characters surprised me. Some of the characters that lived I didn’t know for sure were gonna live. As you go further into the movie, some of the deaths later in the film, still break my heart. Every time I watch, there are two characters in particular that when they die, I still get teary eyed… It still really kills me,” the director continued. “There are two characters who die later in the film that turned in amazing performances, at their best that are like, ‘Oh my god,’ and they’re such good guys, too. It was sort of organic. I’m just following the story. And the story dictates everything for me. And whatever the story needed in that moment, I didn’t balk. And, you know, in a way, it’s weird, because I love these characters. And in another way, it’s weird because I am Amanda Waller, I’m pushing that button on those characters. Because it serves our purposes as an audience to to see them go. That was a an interesting experience. And a lot of fun, very freeing to be able to kill — kill who I wanted to kill.”

You can check out the synopsis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad below:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
