The season finale of Tom Hiddleston’s Loki finally revealed the big bad behind The TVA.
Major spoilers ahead for the season finale of Loki.
Arguably the most interesting aspect of Loki is the inclusion of The Time Variant Authority, an outfit that operates outside of time and space to oversee all of time and to ensure that multiple timelines aren’t created. In short: they police time. The members of the TVA have been led to believe that they’re working under the benevolent and omniscient Time Keepers whose sole purpose is to protect the “sacred timeline”. That ruse was working out pretty well until Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie got mixed up in their business.
In the fourth episode of Loki, it was revealed that the Time Keepers are androids, nothing but an elaborate cover story meant to protect the real villain behind The TVA. After managing to escape the Void where all variants go to die, Sophia Di Martino’s Sylvie and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki end up at a citadel at the end of space and time where they’re greeted by the real man behind The TVA: He Who Remains, a variant of Kang the Conqueror.
Played by Jonathan Majors, He Who Remains reveals that he has been controlling The TVA the entire time and that he purposefully allowed Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino’s characters to see him at this point in time. He Who Remains then goes on to discuss how in the 31st century, scientists began to discover universes stacked upon universes, a.k.a the multiverse. Though this discovery led to peace and innovation, things quickly soured when variants wanted to assume power over different multiverses. He Who Remains then went on to discuss how he isolated what we know as the “sacred timeline” in a bid to dissuade other, more sinister variants of himself to manifest. Should they appear, the multiversal wars could continue. Well, the episode ended with Sylvie killing Majors’ He Who Remains. The stoic and sinister version of Kang should appear in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania or any of the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe projects considering the multiverse has now fully been unleashed.
