Black Widow director Cate Shortland commented on the film’s rumored Iron Man cameo.
SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains spoilers for Black Widow.
Given that Black Widow is set right after the events of Captain America: Civil War, some fans expected to see potential appearances from some of Natasha Romanoff’s fellow Avengers. In particular, a cameo featuring Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) was heavily rumored, with potentially unused scenes from Captain America: Civil War to be implemented into the new film.
As it turns out, Iron Man does not have a cameo appearance in Black Widow. Director Cate Shortland addressed the rumored cameo in an interview with Total Film, and ultimately, it appears that the team at Marvel Studios wanted Black Widow to stand on her own without the presence of her fellow Avenger:
“Initially, there was discussions about everything, about all of the different characters. What we decided was, and I think Kevin was really great, he said, ‘She doesn’t need the boys.’ We didn’t want it to feel like she needs the support. We want her to stand alone. And she does.”
While Black Widow’s fellow Avengers are mentioned by name in her standalone film, Natasha’s journey is focused on her previously-unseen family. Based on Cate Shortland’s comments, not implementing an Iron Man cameo was the right way to go in order for the heroine to truly stand on her own without the support of her Avengers co-stars.
