Game of Thrones actress Nathalie Emmanuel reflected on her character’s death during the final season of the series.
The eighth and final season of HBO’s series Game of Thrones was controversial to say the least. The final season is often regarded as the weakest in the series from critics and fans alike, with much of the criticism targeted at its rushed nature, particularly in regards to how certain characters were written towards the end of the run.
One of the major characters that died in the final season of Game of Thrones was Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel). The character was executed under the orders of Cersei (Lena Headey) and upon her death, she exclaimed, “Dracarys!” which is the High Valyrian word for “Dragonfire.”
Two years after the controversial final season, actress Nathalie Emmanuel has now opened up about Missandei’s death. While promoting her new film F9: The Fast Saga, she reflected on Missandei’s significance to the series, as well as her reaction to her character’s fate:
“When I learned that Missandei was going to die, I knew that, as the only woman of color on the show, I knew that people would feel her loss, like the loss of her, because she’s also just like a really kind, good character. I was not anticipating, I guess, the size of the reaction that happened. I think that really sparked a conversation about, when we make these shows in the future, when we are casting these shows, like, do we just have to have the one person—is there space for more of us? … And I think the answer is yes … And I know the answer is yes.”
George R. R. Martin is currently working on a Game of Thrones spin-off for HBO. Here is the synopsis for House of the Dragon:
Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Game of Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik will serve as the showrunner with Martin and Ryan Condal. House of the Dragon stars Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Paddy Considine.
