F9 star John Cena has applauded Finn Cole for taking on the role of Young Jakob during the film’s many flashbacks.
It’s hard to believe it but The Fast and the Furious franchise has gone on for nine films now. What once started as a kitschy Point Break-like film for the car heads somehow managed to turn into a full-on spy bonanza. The latest film in the franchise, F9, introduces Dominic Torreto’s brother Jakob, played by none other than WWE legend John Cena. The franchise has always been obsessed with family, so it was a bit weird to see Dom’s brother get introduced nine films into the franchise. To help give audiences context and build up Jakob’s mythology, Finn Cole was brought in to star as a younger version of the character.
Without delving into spoilers, F9 has multiple flashback sequences that showcase the relationship between young Dom and Jakob. In an interview with Digital Spy, John Cena discussed the tall order Finn Cole had to live up to as young Jakob, praising the actor for his solid performance.
“A character has to have an arc, they have to have a journey. We could take this out of entertainment and we can talk human to human. If I’m the same human being as last year, something’s wrong. We always have to evolve, we always have to grow.Jakob is no different. He has to be different as a grown man, especially with his journey, than he was as a curious, wide-eyed teenager. Finn mastered a young Jakob. I’m so glad I didn’t have time to corrupt. He did beautifully.”
“It was a big role and a lot of expectations on that, and he pretty much filmed Fast & Furious 0. He filmed the prequel [to the series] and did an amazing job.”

Here is the official synopsis for John Cena’s F9.
Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, this year’s The Suicide Squad).
F9 sees the return of Justin Lin as director, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth chapters of the series when it transformed into a global blockbuster. The action hurtles around the globe—from London to Tokyo, from Central America to Edinburgh, and from a secret bunker in Azerbaijan to the teeming streets of Tblisi. Along the way, old friends will be resurrected, old foes will return, history will be rewritten, and the true meaning of family will be tested like never before.
Directed Justin Lin from a script written by Daniel Casey, F9 stars Vin Diesel, John Cena, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Cardi B, Finn Cole, and Sung Kang, with Helen Mirren and Charlize Theron.
F9 will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of the Fast and Furious franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
