Salma Hayek has revealed the hilarious reason why she didn’t get the role of Trinity in The Matrix.
The Matrix was one of the biggest hits of the 90s, and arguably one of the most influential action films of all time, spawning numerous copycats and sequels. However, when it was in production, the film was considered an unknown quantity, with many stars like Will Smith, Brad Pitt, and Sandra Bullock passing on the film because of how different it was. It’s interesting to imagine all the ‘what if?’ casting scenarios that could have happened with the iconic film. Well, it turns out that Salma Hayek was originally in the running for the role of Trinity, one of the film’s main protagonists. Unfortunately for Hayek, she never got a callback after her audition.
In an interview with Jada Pinkett Smith for Red Table Talk, Salma Hayek discussed how she was in the running for The Matrix, but couldn’t get the role of Trinity for one hilarious reason. Ironically, Jada Pinkett Smith was also in talks to join The Matrix as Trinity, but the role eventually went to Carrie-Anne Moss, who demonstrated great stamina in the audition process.
“We’d jumped through many hurdles, screen testing and many auditions. They brought these stunt coordinators from Asia. It was the physical test. I’m flexible and agile, but I’m lazy. I never really went to the gym, they said, ‘You have to run!’ I go, ‘To where?’ I couldn’t even go around the room once. They never called me again after that day.”
Salma Hayek continued by discussing how she was floored by Carrie-Anne Moss’ physical audition, saying that she was perfect for the role.
“Oh my God! She was so good! It was so embarrassing! She was so fit, she was so focused, she was so disciplined. She was so capable. She was so gracious. And I just looked at this woman, and I thought to myself, ‘That’s who I want to be when I grow up.’”
