JK Simmons discussed what it meant to reprise the role of J Jonah Jameson for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man: Far From Home.
Of the many reasons why Far From Home was already a classic in the eyes of Spider-Man fans, probably the biggest was the return of JK Simmons as J Jonah Jameson, the editor-in-chief of The Daily Bugle. Simmons previously played Jameson in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy but he was later brought back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of the cult-like status surrounding his portrayal of the character. Seeing Simmons return to the chaotic role in Far From Home was arguably the film’s biggest surprise, far larger than his bombshell reveal of Spider-Man being Peter Parker.
In an interview with Den of Geek to promote the upcoming The Tomorrow War, JK Simmons broke down what it was like to return to the character of J Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Far From Home.
“To have the opportunity to kind of do a reboot of the character, I was eager to hang on to the things I really loved about it and totally open to letting go of some of that, and realizing we are in a more updated version of that universe. Hopefully, we found the sweet spot there.”
JK Simmons’ version of J Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man: Far From Home is more akin to a conspiracy theorist and podcaster rather than the traditional newsman the character is seen as. Simmons continued the conversation by discussing the changes between the Far From Home and Raimi versions of the character.
“Mostly just the hair, or the lack thereof. For a lot of characters, that evolution is a really important aspect. I like the lack of evolution of that character. There are ways that he’s evolved, but he’s the same blowhard and that’s what I enjoy doing.”
