Zatanna writer Emerald Fennel has expressed her excitement and intentions for the upcoming DC film.
Emerald Fennel has become the talk of the town after winning Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars for Promising Young Woman. Shortly after her win, she was brought on board by DC to pen a Zatanna film. No director is currently attached but many are speculating that she’ll eventually take on that role herself. In an interview with Empire, Fennel opened up about penning the DC project and how the darkness of the character excited her.
“There are lots of things about her that felt like they could be really, really interesting. And it’ll be an opportunity to make something really quite dark. And that appealed to me, to make something big and scary. I love that stuff.”
She continued by discussing how working on a large-scale DC project like Zatanna allows her to be riskier and loose with her ideas without having to be tied down by a small-scale budget.
“The scale of [these movies] is so massive and so thrilling. Like, why wouldn’t you want to write something like that when you can write huge, massive, crazy sequences and fights? Normally you’re like, how can I show this in the smallest cheapest way [laughs]? To have complete freedom to really let your imagination run wild is such a joy.”
