Justin Theroux recently explained how his cameo appearance in Todd Phillips’ Joker came to be and addressed those sequel rumors.
Warner Bros. is reportedly in active development on a Joker sequel with director Todd Phillips apparently back to co-write the DC film. The sequel may never see the light of day, but Joker did gross a billion dollars, so it isn’t surprising that the studio is looking to capitalize on the film’s success. The Hollywood Reporter recently asked Justin Theroux, who made a cameo in Joker, if he’s heard anything about the sequel:
“I haven’t. All I can say is I haven’t spoken to Todd in forever, and I have not approached him about doing anything for Joker. I won’t say any more than that. Unless he has some brilliant way to weave in that small character, that would really be shoehorning a character into the movie that probably doesn’t need to be there.”
When it comes to random cameos in big genre films, Justin Theroux made an appearance in Joker and showed up briefly in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In the interview, Theroux also explained how his Joker and Star Wars cameos came to be:
“Yeah, I’m not averse to doing those at all. “They” sort of tell you, “Yeah, you shouldn’t really do that because you’re doing so well. You don’t really need to do that.” Well, why wouldn’t I do that? It’s super fun. Joker was just random. Todd Phillips just called me and said that they were shooting in New York, And since I was in New York, he said, “Hey, do you want to do this quick little thing?” And I said, “Sure, yeah.” It was shooting in a week or two weeks. I was like, “Yeah, I’ll do it.” If I wasn’t free, I wouldn’t have done it, but I was free, so I said, “Yeah, I’d love that. That would be super fun.” What’s wrong with sitting around and giggling for a day with Robert De Niro and Todd Phillips? I’m not averse to that. I don’t have too much pride around those things. I won’t say, “Well, that’s not a big enough part,” or, “If you give me some more lines…” Same with Star Wars. I got to go to London for a couple of days and see this incredible set with all of the incredible animatronics, puppetry, design and wardrobe. Yeah, it was absolutely fun.”

Here is the official synopsis for Todd Phillips’ Joker:
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news surrounding the planned sequel from Todd Phillips, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content in the future!
