Sony’s Sanford Panitch recently discussed the studio’s plans for Spider-Man, Venom and the rest of its Marvel characters.
Earlier this week, Sony Pictures announced that Avengers star Aaron Taylor-Johnson has signed on to star in the Kraven the Hunter movie, with Triple Frontier helmer J. C. Chandor directing the project for a January 2023 release. Following the announcement, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group President Sanford Panitch sat down with Variety do discuss the Kraven movie, revealing that the studio decided to cast Taylor-Johnson after seeing his work in the upcoming Brad Pitt starrer Bullet Train.
“It was a ‘I had to look him up’ kind of thing. I didn’t have a lot of familiarity. And then we start watching these incredible dailies [from ‘Bullet Train’], and you really see the full-on action star. He’s charming and he’s funny and he’s holding his own against Brad Pitt. A lot of people can’t do that.”
There have been several hints that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man could share the screen with characters like Tom Hardy’s Venom and Jared Leto’s Morbius, but the wall-crawler has yet to make an appeareance in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. Sanford Panitch promised that fans won’t miss Spider-Man in Venom: Let There Be Carnage before cheekily adding, “It’ll be exciting if they do meet, right?” He then talked about Sony’s relationship with Marvel Studios and producer Kevin Feige, as well as the opportunities that lie ahead.
“There actually is a plan. I think now maybe it’s getting a little more clear for people where we’re headed and I think when No Way Home comes out, even more will be revealed. The great thing is we have this very excellent relationship with Kevin. There’s an incredible sandbox there to play with. We want those MCU movies to be absolutely huge, because that’s great for us and our Marvel characters, and I think that’s the same thing on their side. But we have a great relationship. There’s lots of opportunities, I think, that are going to happen.”
Lastly, Sanford Panitch was asked if Kraven the Hunter and the rest of the studio’s Marvel movies could eventually lead to Sinister Six, a a project that Sony has been trying to get off the ground for years now. Here’s what Panitch had to say on the matter:
“It’s tough, because I think these projects are the kind of things we have to work on in the dark,” he says. “They’re not ready until they’re ready. ‘Kraven’ is a great example because we just didn’t rush it. We could have made that three plus years ago. It’s just now the script’s awesome, J.C. was the right choice, and we found the movie star because it was just kismet, and watching this other movie and realizing that could be the perfect casting.”
As for the Sinister Six? After a long pause, Panitch chuckles. “It would be very cool, wouldn’t it?”
A recent report claimed that Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin is the main villain of Spider-Man: No Way Home, with the character leading a Multiverse version of the Sinister Six. Sony is keeping the plot of No Way Home under wraps, so that remains to be seen.
