Amazon Officially Buys ‘James Bond’ Studio MGM For $8.45 Billion

Amazon is officially buying MGM for $8.45 billion, giving the company the rights to the James Bond franchise among others.

After weeks of speculation and rumors, Amazon has announced that it is officially buying MGM for an eye-watering $8.45 billion. The company will acquire MGM’s huge catalogue of movies, which will hugely bolster Amazon’s streaming service, Amazon Prime Video and offer a variety of different franchises. For the moment it’s not clear whether the James Bond films will eventually be available on the platform but it seems highly likely.

Obviously the next James Bond film has been delayed a number of times due to the ongoing pandemic, but it’s now slated to arrive in October this year. It’ll be interesting to see how Amazon buying MGM affects the release in any way in the future. In a statement released to the press, Mike Hopkins, senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, called MGM’s catalogue a treasure trove of IP and that Amazon plans to develop it further. Take a look below.

“The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of [intellectual property] in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM’s talented team. It’s very exciting and provides so many opportunities for high-quality storytelling.”

What do you make of Amazon buying MGM? How do you think it’ll affect the James Bond franchise and others going forward? Sound-off in the comments below.
