Amazon is officially buying MGM for $8.45 billion, giving the company the rights to the James Bond franchise among others.
After weeks of speculation and rumors, Amazon has announced that it is officially buying MGM for an eye-watering $8.45 billion. The company will acquire MGM’s huge catalogue of movies, which will hugely bolster Amazon’s streaming service, Amazon Prime Video and offer a variety of different franchises. For the moment it’s not clear whether the James Bond films will eventually be available on the platform but it seems highly likely.
Obviously the next James Bond film has been delayed a number of times due to the ongoing pandemic, but it’s now slated to arrive in October this year. It’ll be interesting to see how Amazon buying MGM affects the release in any way in the future. In a statement released to the press, Mike Hopkins, senior VP of Prime Video and Amazon Studios, called MGM’s catalogue a treasure trove of IP and that Amazon plans to develop it further.
