The Falcon and The Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman said that Marvel suggested that Julia Louis-Dreyfus should play Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
One of the biggest surprises of Marvel Studios’ second original series for Disney Plus was the appearance of Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the fifth episode. We see the actress appear as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, AKA Madame Hydra, following the trial of John Walker (played by Wyatt Russell) after he went viral for his brutal and bloody killing of one of the Flag Smashers.
According to series head writer Malcolm Spellman, the writing team wrote a certain type of CIA character in mind, and wasn’t until Marvel suggested them that it would indeed be Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Spellman reflected on that decision in an interview:
“That was [Marvel’s] suggestion. We wrote a shady-ass CIA character, and Marvel was like, ‘It should be Val.’ And one thing I give Marvel credit for, they are fans just like we are. They be knowing certain s–t because they geek out. They’re like, ‘Oh man, what if it was Val?’ Then the whole room was like, ‘Oh, f–k! Can we do that? Can we use Val?’ Then they know they got one. But I think that’s why it hit so hard, because she appeared like an Easter egg.”
It would’ve been interesting enough to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus involved in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier in any way, but Marvel suggesting that she would play Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, AKA Madame Hydra, was a great move. She is certainly being set up to be a pivotal character in the story moving forward, whether we see Julia Louis-Dreyfus return in a second season of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier or in the recently-announced fourth Captain America movie currently in development.
