New concept art from Zack Snyder’s Justice League showcases an alternate and more ceremonious design for Darkseid.
While Darkseid may not have been the big bad that the Justice League were directly fighting in Zack Snyder’s cut, the ruler of Apokolips largely loomed over Earth’s greatest heroes. The theatrical cut of Justice League only mentioned Darkseid in passing, with Steppenwolf being the film’s villain. Plotlines and character arcs largely changed when Zack Snyder was brought in to finish up his cut of Justice League, with one of his most prominent changes being the inclusion of Darkseid. In Snyder’s cut, Darkseid remained a watchful ruler on Apokolips, waiting for Steppenwolf to conquer Earth so the tyrannical ruler could get his hand on the Anti-Life equation.
One of the biggest praises that Zack Snyder’s Justice League got thrown its way was how good it looked, from the overall set design to the costumes and looks of its characters. Darkseid’s look was widely praised for being comic-accurate and having Snyder’s typical brooding flair. As with all films with intricate visual designs, alternate versions of character looks are always made, with Darkseid not being an exception. A concept design from artist Jerad S.Marantz shows off a young Darkseid, notably without his iconic helmet and brooding armor. Darkseid’s face also looks slimmer and he appears to have spikes lining up the edges of his shoulders. Some fans have compared this alternate look at young Darkseid to Steppenwolf’s design in the Snyder cut.

Here is the official synopsis for the Zack Snyder cut:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
