Mortal Kombat star Joe Taslim sat down with us to discuss his role as Sub-Zero and possibly playing a Marvel or DC Comics supervillain.
The Mortal Kombat reboot features some amazing bad guys from the Netherrealm, but none of them hold a candle to Joe Taslim’s Sub-Zero. Taslim’s presence as the character is intimidating to say the least and the villain is very frightening throughout the film. I recently got the chance to talk with Taslim about Mortal Kombat and he told us that his favorite characters to play as in the game are Sub-Zero and another incarnation of the villain known as Noob Saibot. The latter was introduced in Mortal Kombat II as an undead wraith who was later revealed to be Bi-Han, the original Sub-Zero played by Taslim in the live-action reboot.
“I grew up playing the game. I remember, I was 12, 13 years old, back in South Sumatra, my island. And then I remember I didn’t have the console. I needed to go to my friend’s house just to play the game.” Taslim told us. “It was crazy, crazy memory. And then when I heard they wanted me to play Sub-Zero, it was just unreal. I love Sub-Zero but now I love… I play as Noob Saibot more, so they’re the same. They’re the same.”
Taslim was such an intimidating villain that I could see him taking on the members of the Avengers or the Justice League as a Marvel Studios or DC Films supervillain. So, I asked him if he was up for the task.”Well, I think to play villain is interesting and then you have more freedom. You have more freedom to improvise because the borders of the character are very thin. You play a good guy… you can’t do this, you can’t do that. So I love playing a villain because as an actor, you can just give more, you can just go all out crazy. But I think again, it depends on the story,” Taslim revealed. “It depends if the villain has a background and there’s a strong reason why that’s the type of villain I want to play. It’s not just playing an evil character or something. People are like, “Okay, he’s just bad guy,” but as an actor, I have obligation to give a soul to a character… to give dimensions. So let’s see, yeah if they give me a good villain role, a strong one, maybe.”
