Justice League writer Chris Terrio has revealed that he wanted to have his name removed from the theatrical version of the movie that was overseen by Joss Whedon.
During a recent interview, Chris Terrio opened up about the theatrical version of Justice League and how he tried to get his name off the movie prior to its release in November 2017. Terrio penned the original script of the superhero movie, which was cut down by about two hours due to a mandate by then-Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara. The project was also heavily rewritten and reshot by Joss Whedon, the director behind the first two Avengers movies.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Chris Terrio talked about his first viewing of Justice League and his initial reaction to the theatrical version of the movie. Here’s how things went down:
“I was in L.A. at the time working on Star Wars [The Rise of Skywalker]. I was on the west side of Los Angeles working with J.J. [Abrams] at the time, and I drove to the studio and I sat down and watched it a couple of weeks before release. I immediately called my lawyer and said, “I want to take my name off the film.” [The lawyer] then called Warner Bros. and told them that I wanted to do that.”
Chris Terrio then explained that he was credited in the theatrical cut of Justice League because having his name removed from it would have resulted in a release date delay and “scandal.”
“Prints had already been struck or hard drives burned or however they deliver movies these days. The elements were on their way, and to remove my name they would have had to restrike the prints or redo the digital copies, and the film could be delayed. It would be an international scandal and news story. So I shut up and I said nothing publicly. I’ve never said anything about Justice League since then, but the movie doesn’t represent my work.”
Justice League recently received a director’s cut, restoring the original work of Zack Snyder and Chris Terrio. The cut was released on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max to generally positive reviews, with critics and casual viewers both agreeing that it’s superior to the Joss Whedon version.
Here is the official synopsis for the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
