Godzilla vs. Kong was a major success for HBO Max with reported numbers putting it ahead of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984 in views.
Last week, Godzilla vs. Kong became the latest blockbuster to hit both HBO Max and theaters with the studio’s new pandemic release strategy for 2021. The new release strategy used by Warner Bros. has prompted some questions as to how success will be measured based on a film’s performance if so many are watching from home with an HBO Max subscription. So far, Godzilla vs. Kong already looks like a success based on the $48.1M grossed in domestic theaters, which is the most for a debut during the pandemic.
Now Samba TV shared 3.6M households watched at least five minutes of Godzilla vs. Kong over its first five days on HBO Max as well. Godzilla vs. Kong‘s numbers beat Wonder Woman 1984‘s 2.2M over Christmas weekend and Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘s 1.8M in its first four days. The next major film to hit HBO Max will be Mortal Kombat on April 23.
