James Gunn recently explained why they decided to move away from the hammerhead King Shark design for The Suicide Squad.
One of the many highlights in The Suicide Squad‘s first trailer was King Shark, who was also revealed to be voiced by Sylvester Stallone. King Shark appeared in Grant Gustin’s The Flash, but its budget notably restricts the show. The Suicide Squad will be able to show-off King Shark in all his glory, and so far, it looks like he might steal the movie.
In the comics, King Shark sports different looks, and James Gunn shared on Twitter that they considered the hammerhead look. The Suicide Squad director also explained why they ultimately decided to go with the more traditional design and a dad bod in the end:
I did tests with the hammerhead design, which I love & originally thought I’d use. But having eyes on the sides far apart made it incredibly awkward shooting interactions with other people. You couldn’t really see him looking at the other person & the shots tended to be too wide. https://t.co/7Pos3tZgma pic.twitter.com/GlIzjQjutU

I love that design & the Harley Quinn show & @RonFunches version, but it was a complete coincidence as we were shooting a year before they debuted. @TheSlyStallone’s version (developed by @steveagee
on set) is very different. https://t.co/uy9BVZ1exb— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 27, 2021
“I wrote this role for you in The Suicide Squad. It won’t take too much of your time.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah. It’s a big, kinda chubby, human-eating shark.”
Laughs. “Anything for you, brother.”@TheSlyStallone #TheSuicideSquad https://t.co/EVo8ylwRMz— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) March 27, 2021
One final King Shark bit of trivia from #TheSuicideSquad. In this bit of footage, the Shark is CG of course, but the person is real. Well, not a real person, but a practical effect by our SFX & prosthetics teams that I shot. https://t.co/02GfU696ME

You can check out the synopsis for The Suicide Squad below:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
