The Falcon and The Winter Soldier introduced Carl Lumbly as an incredibly important Captain America character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Spoilers ahead for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier episode two.
After setting the stage in the premire, the second episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finally pitted Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes against Erin Kellyman’s freedom fighters, the Flag Smashers. The two were surprised at how many super soldiers they were up against in the fight, which is what led Bucky to let Sam in on a surprising revelation about the U.S. Government and its pursuit of manufacturing superpowers in World War II. He took Sam to meet an ageing hero living in the suburbs whose existence had been kept a secret; Isaiah Bradley – played by Carl Lumbly.
In the brilliant miniseries, Truth: Red, White and Black, Isaiah Bradley is revealed to be one of 300 Black soldiers who were experimented on by the government in an attempt to recreate Steve Rogers – but only five subjects survived. Of those five, Isaiah Bradley was the only one still alive following a number of tragic deaths. His last task saw him head to Germany to kill a German scientist developing a super soldier serum – and he stole a Captain America suit to carry out the mission.
On his return to the U.S., he was locked up for 17 years for the crime, whereas in the series Carl Lumbly’s Isaiah mentions he was imprisoned for thirty years before flying into a fit of rage at seeing Bucky again. Bradley also revealed that he hunted Barnes in the 1950s when he was still being controlled by Hydra as the Winter Soldier as the show further leans into troubled hero’s history. Whether or not Isaiah donned a Captain America suit of his own remains to be seen, but we’ll probably learn more about his MCU backstory in future episodes of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
