Danny Elfman has no shortage of comic book characters he’s composed for, from Batman to Hulk. Elfman even provided the score for Hellboy II: The Golden Army and notably took care of composing duties on the theatrically-released Justice League movie. For Justice League, Elfman brought in his Batman theme from his time on the Tim Burton films and incorporated John Williams’ classic Superman tune.

With Danny Elfman taking over the scoring duties from Michael Giacchino on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there’s been some speculation on whether Giacchino’s fan-favorite musical cue for the Sorcer Supreme will stick around. The good news is it will after Elfman shared with Composer Magazine that he plans on using Giacchino’s Doctor Strange theme in the upcoming sequel:

“We’ll definitely refer to his original theme, and I’ll no doubt be coming up with new motifs for new situations and characters. I’m not going to ignore it. I don’t believe in that. There’s this weird thought process in Hollywood every time you do something new that you’ve got to let the original musical themes go and start fresh. I think that doesn’t serve an audience well. So I like doing variations on a theme that I know for a character that an audience already associates with them. I think that’s important. When I did Avengers: Age of Ultron, I was very careful to find places to play around with Alan Silvestri’s theme. And I enjoyed it.”

Details on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to feature horror elements. Furthermore, the Disney Plus mini-series WandaVision will also serve as the lead-in to the sequel. Scott Derrickson is still attached to the film as an executive producer, with Sam Raimi set to direct from a script written by Michael Waldron. The sequel will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Xochitl Gomez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released on March 25th, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on Danny Elfman, the sequel, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
