After years of waiting, Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally here! But what happens in the additional Knightmare scenes?
Warning! Spoilers ahead for Zack Snyder’s Justice League!
When audiences got the first glimpse at the Knightmare scene in Batman v Superman it was a tantalizing experience. We were being teased with the arrival of Darkseid and a post-apocalyptic vision of our favorite characters. Fast-forward to the present day and we’ve finally seen Zack Snyder’s Justice League in it’s full form. And after Wonder Woman beheads Steppenwolf and the team briefly come face-to-face with Darkseid, the director jumps ahead in the timeline – treating us to a last dip in the Knightmare future.
The first glimpse of the post-apocalyptic future we get comes from Cyborg integrating with the Kryptonian ship in Metropolis just before Superman’s resurrection. It quickly jumps between the Amazons burning Wonder Woman’s body on a funeral pyre, while Darkseid skewers Aquaman underwater – as his Omega Beams also fire through the water. But the most intimidating moment shows Superman sobbing as he cradles Lois Lane’s charred corpse in his arms… With Darkseid towering behind him. Clearly, this is the beginning of the Apokoliptian villain corrupting the Man of Steel.
But Snyder also delivers us a full Knightmare scene as part of the Epilogue chapter in the film, showing Ben Affleck’s Batman, Cyborg, Mera, Deathstroke and The Flash as they all attempt to keep hope alive as a band of survivors from Darkseid’s assault. But when Mera challenges Bruce over not knowing how she feels after Aquaman’s death – a lone, crazed voice begins to speak up… Jared Leto’s Joker. The Clown Prince of Crime and Batman finally share the screen together as Joker laments about knowing Batman better than anyone before Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader vows to kill the villain slowly.
Why the animosity? Robin’s death aside, a dying Harley Quinn made the Dark Knight promise to make it slow. The implication is that Joker killed her – but it’s not explicitly clear. But for the sake of saving the world and changing the events of the Knightmare timeline, Batman and Joker agree to uphold their shaky alliance… For now. Although it ends with them having a bigger problem on their hands, a Darkseid-controlled Superman. Uh oh.
What did you think to the new Knightmare scene? Did you enjoy the Snyder Cut more than the theatrical version? Sound-off in the comments below!
Here is the official synopsis for the Snyder Cut:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
