Justice League director Zack Snyder revealed he actually shot a scene for the film giving John Stewart’s Green Lantern a cameo.
Although Zack Snyder’s Justice League has finally been revealed to the world, the director isn’t quite done teasing what he originally wanted to do with his cut of the film. As many fans know, Harry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter arrives at the end of the film to offer help to Bruce Wayne, but the director originally wanted to use the cameo as a way of introducing the Green Lantern Corps into the modern timeline. In an eye-opening interview with Anthony Breznican for Vanity Fair, Snyder revealed that John Stewart was meant to show up instead.
During the interview, Zack Snyder explained that he shot a version of the ending with John Stewart’s Green Lantern, but because Warner Bros. has plans for the hero he wasn’t allowed to use it. He noted that including Martian Manhunter at the end was the compromise. It’s worth noting that Snyder also debated using Ryan Reynolds‘ Green Lantern in the same scene, so clearly he’d planned the idea of the Corps being a key part of Earth’s fight against Darkseid for quite some time. Take a look at the filmmaker discussing John Stewart below.
“We shot a version of this scene with Green Lantern, but the studio really fought me and said, ‘We really don’t want you to do Green Lantern.’ So I made a deal with them, and they let me do this [instead]. It would be John Stewart. They were like, ‘We have plans for John Stewart and we want to do our own announcement. So I said all right, I’ll give you that. So [Martian Manhunter] was the compromise.”
What do you make of the news? Are you surprised Warner Bros. didn’t want Zack Snyder to use John Stewart? Would Green Lantern have been a better choice for Justice League? Sound-off in the comments below!
Here is the official synopsis for the Snyder Cut:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
