Mortal Kombat director Simon McQuoid and producer Todd Garner sat down with us and revealed some interesting things about the upcoming reboot.
We recently got the chance to view the first thirteen minutes of the upcoming live-action reboot of Mortal Kombat and participate in an early press day for the film where we had a roundtable discussion with director Simon McQuoid and producer Todd Garner. McQuoid and Garner played coy on numerous things but the former revealed some interesting details on the character lineup and a potential sequel.
“Well, we sort of felt that there was a need to go for the classic set as much as we could. Kung Lao obviously needed to come in, as he hasn’t really been done justice live action and we felt that, and there’s room… None of us ever talk about sequels. We’ve never talked about that. Whenever someone does, we go ‘We’re not talking about that.’ Because let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s try and get this right.” McQuoid told Heroic Hollywood. “If we get the tonality and we get this right, then it’s guys like you that will decide whether there’s a sequel. It’s not for me to decide. Right? There’s obviously a massive opportunity. I say that because I want you to realize the context of what I’m about, which is… There’s a big opportunity with lots of characters.”
The Mortal Kombat director went on to discuss the addition Lewis Tan, who plays an entirely new character to the franchise named Cole, and teased the surprises to come. “There’s 80 odd characters. They’re bringing new characters in all the time. It’s why we felt we could bring in a new character into this film,” said McQuoid. “It’s sort of precedent and helped us story-wise. And then there’s some things you’ll see that have yet to be revealed.”
The first thirteen minutes of Mortal Kombat are pretty brutal and set up the tone of the film and we wanted to know if we should expect the same amount of violence and gore in the rest of the project. Producer Todd Garner thinks that we should expect even more crazy fight scenes throughout Mortal Kombat. “Well, every fight that you will see in the movie has its own personality. So, Simon and the fight coordinators worked very hard to say, ‘Okay, what is this fight? Who’s fighting?’ So the first 13 minutes does more than just set the tone.”
Garner went on to describe an even more brutal fight scene that happens later in the film and from the way he talks about it I’m very intrigued. “There’s a hand-to-hand fight in this movie that is so brutal, that is like nothing I’ve ever seen.” Garner said. “I mean it is intense and violent and messy and disturbing, which is totally different than the scene you saw. Which is totally different than the end scene, which is totally different than the middle scene.”
