‘Justice League’: Zack Snyder Talks Negative Reaction To Ben Affleck’s Batman

Ben Affleck Batman v Superman Dawn of Justice Bruce WayneJustice League director Zack Snyder opened up about the initial negative reaction to Ben Affleck’s Batman when he debuted back in 2016.

The reaction to the DC Extended Universe has been very divided over the years, with many people disliking the edgier, moody tone that was injected into some of the most well-known superheroes in history. Many complaints were levelled at Ben Affleck’s older, grizzled version of Batman when he first appeared on-screen back in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However Justice League director Zack Snyder recently explained that this iteration of the hero was meant to deconstruct the Dark Knight.

While speaking to The New York Times, Zack Snyder was asked about audiences being unwilling to accept Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader. The Justice League director explained that he’s fine with the warrior-monk version of the hero that audiences want to see, but Batman v Superman was an attempt to deconstruct the Dark Knight in a similar way to Watchmen. Hopefully fans like his final outing in the cowl in Justice League as much as critics do. Take a look below.

“It could be. And that’s fine, too. I don’t have a dog in the hunt. When I made ‘Watchmen,’ it’s deconstructionist. It’s a movie that pokes holes in your heroes. And [Batman v Superman] is the same thing. It’s meant to say, ‘Oh, Batman’s drunk and taking painkillers and he’s sleeping with some anonymous girl. He’s a broken person. He dresses up as a bat and he goes out at night and he beats people up. He has issues. I do think the movie came along at a point where everyone was like, oh, we don’t want that Batman. We want Batman to be the warrior-monk who’s cool. And I personally am fine with that.”

Here is the official synopsis for the Snyder Cut:

“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”

Directed by Zack Snyder, Justice League stars Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J. K. Simmons, and Ciarán Hinds.
