A man campaigning to be the next Governor of Chiba in Japan is doing so dressed as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.
Although it’s been over a year since Joker made its way into theaters, it clearly had a lasting effect on some audiences. Per brobible, Yuusuke Kawai is running for the Governor of Chiba Prefecture in Japan – but he’s doing so dressed in an outfit clearly inspired by the alter-ego of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck in the Todd Phillips movie. Kawai is a member of the Party to Make All of Chiba a Land of Dreams and Magic, and hops that his wild look will “get the support of the masses.”
When speaking to Tokyo Sports, Yuusuke Kawai explained his reason for dressing like the Joaquin Phoenix character, noting that he’s hoping to win over voters because of the clown’s “dark hero” status. While that might be glorifying a fictional serial killer a little too much – it’s certainly captured the attention of the media. Take a look at Kawai’s Joker outfit below.
“Since the clown is kind of a dark hero, I had this impression that I could get the support of the masses. I’m going to aim for laughs. Even if [I] talked [as] my true self, it wouldn’t be news.”
Take a look at Kawai’s Joker-inspired look below.
Do you think the colorful campaign style will help draw favor for the Governor candidate? Do you think it’s a good idea to run for office dressed as an anarchic villain like Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker? Sound-off in the comments below!
Here is the official synopsis for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker:
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
Directed by Todd Phillips from a script he co-wrote with Scott Silver, the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
Joker is now available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for all the latest news surrounding Joaquin Phoenix, DC Films and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content in the future!
