James Cameron’s Avatar is expected to take back the title of the highest-grossing film of all-time from Avengers: Endgame thanks to a re-release in China.
18 months ago, Avengers: Endgame took down Avatar to become the highest-grossing film of all-time by earning $2,789.2 billion at the worldwide box office. According to Deadline, it appears Avatar is about to take back that title after a re-release in China that started this weekend. Before the re-release, Avengers: Endgame was ahead of the James Cameron film by $7.4 million.
Avatar opened to $3.5M with theaters re-opened post-COVID-19 in China on Friday. It’s now projected that Avatar will overtake Avengers: Endgame and become the highest-grossing movie of all-time once again. This all comes as the Avatar franchise now falls under Disney, with James Cameron planning several sequels, the first of which will be released in 2022.

Here is the official synopsis for the first Avatar film:
AVATAR takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on an epic adventure, ultimately fighting to save the alien world he has learned to call home. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of Titanic, first conceived the film 15 years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not exist yet. Now, after four years of production, AVATAR, a live action film with a new generation of special effects, delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.
Avatar 2 is currently set to be released on December 16, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on James Cameron’s upcoming sequels, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
