Justice League director Zack Snyder discussed the fact that Joss Whedon’s version of the film is canon for the DC Extended Universe.
Although director Zack Snyder is finally getting the chance to reveal his vision of Justice League to the world in just a few days time, the filmmaker is very aware that Warner Bros. is only considering Joss Whedon’s theatrical cut as canon in the DC Extended Universe. And when speaking to the DC Cinematic Cast, Snyder explained that his trilogy of movies has now become its own insulated entity among Warner Bros.’ other DC films.
“It’s interesting, sort of in the DCEU, or whatever it’s become, that that trilogy (comprised of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League) sort of insulates itself in some ways [and] becomes its own thing now. I famously said, and it’s true, this isn’t controversial, my Justice League is not canon, right? Canon for Warner Bros. is the Joss Whedon version of Justice League.”
The film will include new scenes and footage which expand the story of Justice League, including the overarching villain Darkseid in the plot as Steppenwolf attempts to take over. During his appearance on the podcast, Zack Snyder also explained that because Joss Whedon’s Justice League is canon, it’s allowed him to work with “autonomy” on his original vision for the film take a look below.
“In their mind, that’s canon. And what I’m doing is not. Everything is not. So it’s just an interesting, that relationship. And I’m fine with it because I feel like the only way that I could have made this film with autonomy was because of that, because of me admitting and agreeing to the fact that it is not canon. The grander, greater concept for the DCEU is on another road. And there’s nothing I can do about that. That is just, it is what it is. It’s not my decision.”

Here is the official synopsis for the Zack Snyder cut:
“In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.”
