Justice League star Joe Manganiello revealed he was originally going to reprise his Deathstroke role for the Suicide Squad sequel.
It’s well-known that Joe Manganiello would’ve played the villain of The Batman back when Ben Affleck was attached. So far, we’ve only seen Manganiello’s Deathstroke in Justice League‘s theatrical cut, and it’s unclear if he has a future in the DC Extended Universe, but we will get a chance to see him at least one more time in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
After the success of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, a planned sequel went through several versions before it ended up in the hands of James Gunn. Joe Manganiello recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he was initially going to be in the Suicide Squad sequel as Deathstroke:
“There were four or five different versions of Suicide Squad 2 that I was put on hold for, for dates, waiting for one actor to free up and we were going to go.”
Joe Manganiello also touched on the Deathstroke film he was going to do with The Raid director Gareth Evans:
“When the dust settled, it was not seen as a priority to make a $40 million movie about a villain origin story in which you show the backstory,” the actor admitted.

Here is the synopsis for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars David Dastmalchian, John Cena, Jai Courtney, Joaquín Cosío, Nathan Fillion, Joel Kinnaman, Mayling Ng, Flula Borg, Sean Gunn, Juan Diego Botto, Storm Reid, Pete Davidson, Taika Waititi, Alice Braga, Steve Agee, Tinashe Kajese, Daniela Melchior, Peter Capaldi, Julio Ruiz, Jennifer Holland, Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Margot Robbie, and Michael Rooker.
The Suicide Squad is currently scheduled to hit theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news regarding Joe Manganiello’s future as Deathstroke, and subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
