New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday movie theaters will reopen in March with showings at a limited capacity and other COVID-19 protocols in place.
Movie theaters in several states have been open for months, but a major reason why studios are delaying their biggest films is because two major markets haven’t been: Los Angeles and New York City. Deadline first reported the latter is moving forward with a reopening plan—a sign that the industry might be back on track.
On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced movie theaters will be allowed to reopen at a reduced capacity in New York City starting March 5. Movie theaters will be restricted to 25% capacity and no more than 50 people in an auditorium. Additionally, face masks, social distancing measures, and enhanced air filtration systems will also be required for theaters to reopen.
